It had been a long day, and Slater’s attention had been pulled in a thousand directions. Unfortunately, none of them had been Hope’s, and he’d been so overwhelmed with tasks that he’d lost complete track of how he ended up dragging his exhausted self toward the parking lot nine hours after walking through the resort lobby that morning. What a day.

He’d headed for cabin six and relaxed on the couch, waiting for Hope, drowsing a little. As he waited, Slater felt a new excitement fill him at the thought of seeing her. Something had changed last night in the time they’d spent together.

It was seven o’clock on the dot when Slater heard the front door ease open. He could tell that something was off, even before Hope spoke. Where she’d been dressed casually the prior day, now she’d come to their practice still in her work clothes. She still looked stunning in the understated burgundy skirt suit, but he couldn’t help but notice that it added an air of detachment to her that he found curious. He looked down at his short-sleeved button-down and chinos. He felt underdressed.

“Hey,” he said, standing. “How was your day? If I could boil water for pasta without burning it, I would have fixed you something, but did I bring the to-go menu from the Bean Pot, if you want to get some takeout.”

“I’ve already eaten, thanks,” Hope said, settling on the couch. She was carrying a notepad, the same one she’d had at the lakeside.

“Everything okay?” he asked, sitting back down next to her. His guitar was already propped against the couch arm, and he picked it up, slinging the strap over his head. “Bad day?”

“It was a little stressful, actually, and I’d rather not discuss it. Can we just get to practice, please?”

Slater was taken aback, but he didn’t press her. Maybe it was the stress of the day. Maybe she was spooked after he’d grabbed her hand last night at the party. Maybe she’d been thinking all the same things that he’d said to Wyatt at the truck last night, and her distance was a reflection of that.

She doesn’t really belong here. She has a life to get back to. She’s only doing this as a favor.

“Sure.” He turned to grab a book of sheet music from the end table nearest him, flipping it open. “Want to practice the first-dance song again, or some of the later songs? Or, we could work on that original…”

She held up the notepad that she’d been holding in her lap. “I wanted to show you this. I thought we might be able to adapt the lyrics, or, you know, use it somehow.”

Slater reached out for the notepad, meeting her eyes for the split second that she allowed it before she looked away. “You’re writing music again?”

She laughed, short, dryly. “No. This is one of our old songs. It’s the one I was singing in the piano room the night you asked me to help you. You
